![]() It's timeless, smart, visually brilliant and a great movie to watch with children to this day. It's far more of a kids movie than what would come later for Harry Potter, but that's entirely appropriate given the source material. The Philosopher's Stone is one of his best. The man directed Home Alone and Mrs Doubtfire for god's sake, he knew what he was doing! With fantastic movies down the line, Prisoner of Azkaban, being the most obvious example, it's easy to forget Harry Potter's sequels were following a visual and stylistic template designed, in part, by the steady hand of Chris Columbus. Outside of Star Wars and Indiana Jones, is there a more iconic and memorable Williams theme? I'd argue no. Perhaps most importantly, we wouldn't have had the sublime John Williams score. We wouldn't have the perfectly pitched Harry Potter aesthetic. We wouldn't have had the tremendous, perfect casting of Daniel Radcliffe, Emily Watson and Rupert Grint without this movie. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) Wherever the series goes next, you can find some fantastic stuff here.ĥ. Katherine Waterston and Ezra Miller provide intriguingly off-kilter support, and Colin Farrell is such a smolderingly seductive baddie it's a real shame Depp took over. It's also really well-cast: Eddie Redmayne is great as Newt Scamander, a big screen hero whose character is defined by gentleness, curiosity and compassion instead of violence and aggression. It gives fans and casual viewers a chance to enjoy the fantasy without being stuck in twee boarding school world, and the expanded look at Rowling's wizarding world comes with delightfully colorful creatures and a dandy retro fantasy vibe. And thanks to off-screen controversy (Rowling's outspoken views on Twitter, Johnny Depp's marital difficulties) the Fantastic Beasts series has sputtered like a wonky wand.īut we will say this: the first film is decent. When Warner Bros decided to turn Rowling's slim pamphlet into a sprawling multi-movie franchise, it could be seen as a return to the magic or cynical moneymaking sorcery. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) And stay tuned until the post-credit scene.7. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (DVD). Cast change change source References change change source Chris Columbus (director) (). Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson are the pioneer trio in Harry Potter series for the 8 movies. It breaks my heart when I see people calling this movie boring, or forgettable, when it's clearly everything but these two. This is a list of Harry Potter movies cast members. "Oh no, it was Quirrell all along, Snape was just a red herring, who could have guessed, and now I'll defeat him with the power of love" is not as good as "HOLY FREAKING CRAP, MY FREAKING FUTURE WIFE OPENED THE FREAKING CHAMBER OF SECRETS, I'M IN MORTAL DANGER BECAUSE I'M STANDING NEXT TO 16-YEAR OLD MAGICAL HITLER, I NEED TO DESTROY A FREAKING HORCRUX AND I HAVE TO KILL A FREAKING 50 FEET SNAKE WITH A FREAKING SWORD WHICH COULD GET ME POISONED". And the mystery in this movie is 1000000x better than the one in Philosopher's Stone. What was I talking about? Oh yeah, Ron! He has some really great faces on this one, and it's cool that he gets some time to shine without Hermione overshadowing him. I don't mind that Prisoner didn't focus on him as much, and while I haven't read the books, I've heard the complaining about Ron on the 3rd movie, but since that movie is more about Harry and Hermione's friendship, I don't care about it. And Ron's great too! He wouldn't be this good until Deathly Hallows. Speaking of Lucius, he's in this movie too! And if I only knew what conditioner he used. Probably some of the best casting for secondary characters in the whole HP movie franchise together with Imelda Staunton, Evanna Lynch, Matthew Lewis, Tom Felton, Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter, Gary Oldman, David Thewlis, Jason Isaacs. Better CGI, better comedy, better characters, better acting, better Quidditch, better DADA professor, better villain (which is the same villain, but better), better everything! Better movie! It's so exciting, each action scene leaves you on the edge of your seat, and it introduces us to some of the best characters in the series! We get to meet the Weasleys instead of just seeing them, we get a lot more backstory about Tom Riddle, and I'll be damned if Lockhart isn't a charming coward. Seriously, this movie is so much fun! It's just Philosopher's Stone, but better.
